Yale Visitor's & Emeritus Faculty Center
New Haven, Connecticut
The Yale Visitor’s & Emeritus Faculty Center is really two projects in one. The first involves the historic renovation and facility upgrade for Yale’ Visitor Center and the second is the adaptive reuse of the second level for a new facility to house the Yale Emeritus Faculty Center.
The historic core is a wonderful Federalist style timber frame and clapboard house, known as the Pierpont House, which has faced New Haven’s historic green since 1767. As a private home, it received a series of additions, designed by the distinguished NY firm of Delano & Aldrich, in 1900 and 1908. Yale acquired the home in 1921 and has utilized the building for a variety of purposes since that time.
The structural work involved the removal of unattractive 20th C. additions and the construction of various infill pieces to create both new indoor and outdoor spaces. In addition to accommodating the new program and uses, the facility has been completely modernized with a new elevator to provide ADA access, code upgrades, all new MEP, and sprinkler, fire safety, tel/com and IT systems. At the same time, special care was exercised to preserve and/or recreate original historic materials including siding, trim, roof, windows, doors, entry pediment, and lighting. Interior detailing included restoring original paneling, flooring and trim while integrating new furniture and partition systems.
Services involved architecture and interior design services with FF&E. Sub-consultants provided structural and MEP services.
