New Haven Boathouse at Canal Dock Park
New Haven, Connecticut
The New Haven Boathouse at Canal Dock Waterfront Park included a feasibility study and conceptual design for a new mixed-use structure to house a community boathouse for fixed and sliding seat rowing and small sailing craft; offices and classrooms for cultural/history organizations; and exhibition and meeting spaces. One design option is to re-create the historic Yale (Adee) Boathouse which is being demolished for the construction of the new Q-Bridge. Another is to design a boathouse driven solely by the Programming effort.
The new site is to be a 3-acre pile supported platform perched over the tidal flats of the Long Wharf shoreline and will incorporate festival sheds, eco-study pavilion, boat pier, and various other site amenities.
An interesting historic preservation aspect of the study included the survey and assessment of the condition of significant historical elements of the old Boathouse for re-use in the new structure. The designs look for opportunities to re-use exterior and interior elements.
Services included architectural feasibility analysis, programming, design, structural engineering, move methodologies & conservation.
