New Canaan Train Depot

New Canaan, Connecticut

The New Canaan Train Depot project includes historic restoration and facility upgrade as part of CT DOT’s ADA upgrade program of key Metro North commuter rail stations. The project was rehabilitated to the Sec’y of Treasury’s Standards for Historic Rehabilitation and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).

Program includes renovation and upgrade of the station structure and depot including restrooms, ticket office, waiting room, heavy timber canopy structure and the design of new way finding signage, high level platforms, sidewalks and parking lots.

The existing building/site is a 1868 Gothic Revival style rail station. The project involved moving the station for platform construction; interior and exterior alterations; refinishing and extending the platform canopy; and research and selection of historic exterior paint scheme. The historic context informed many of the site decisions including lighting, paving materials, railings, finishes, fixturing, furniture and signage.
