Rogers-Ritch-Merritt House at Mill Hill Historic Park
Norwalk, Connecticut
Slated for demolition, this 18th Century 1500 SF vernacular structure was saved by the Norwalk Historic Commission to be used as a Visitor Center & Museum at the Mill Hill Historic Park adjacent to the Norwalk River and managed by the Historic Society. Extensive research was done to identify original fabric and restore the house to the way it looked at the turn of the 19th Century. It was determined that the house had a maritime origin and was likely used as sail shop on the first level and the sail maker’s residence on the second level. The house was remarkable for the quality of craftsmanship and a large central chimney mass. Original fireboxes along with an oven were discovered during dismantling.
The new location was a sloped site creating basement level offices & storage for Society. ADA access and facilities were added.
Services included site planning, architecture, interpretive design, ADA, preservation & historic consulting. MEP provided by sub-consultant.
