Laboratories Introduction
Gregg Wies & Gardner Architects (GWG) designs laboratory environments which recognize the changes that technology continuously brings to scientific research in medicine and science. Our laboratories are built around cores carrying mechanical, electrical and plumbing chases with changeable work surfaces which can be adapted to uses and users as the grants which support the work of primary investigators change. We place special emphasis on meeting the highest standards for environmental safety in the design of laboratories.
Many of these laboratories are embedded in other institutional facilities, such as teaching laboratories on the secondary and university levels, while others are specific research laboratories, designed to support a particular effort of a primary investigator, but generic enough to be adaptable to the changing needs of researchers as science leads in different directions and grants fund new research. GWG has completed over 30 research laboratories in medical school settings and for the Veterans Administration.
The experience base of GWG in the laboratory field is extensive, both in the number of completed projects and the types of projects addressed. Our firm has designed not only generic research laboratories for physicians, biologists, chemists and physicists, but created specialized laboratories for ceramic grinding of rock in a geology lab, electronics suites for physicists, and a building, free of ferrous materials to house a large research magnet. Additionally, we designed three distinctly different research aquaria, including a recently completed fish facility which replicates tropical temperatures, humidity and changing lighting conditions by computer programming on a 365 day cycle and two greenhouses to house plants with specialty controls of light and temperature.
Private testing laboratories include facilities serving hospitals, medical and dental practices providing hematology, cytology, histology, bacteriology, serology, urinalysis, and DNA testing.
