Yale Armory Equestrian Center

New Haven, Connecticut

The Yale Armory, located on Central Avenue in between the intramural fields and the softball field is one of the Athletic Department's greatest secrets. The Armory was built in 1916 as a U.S. cavalry training center and covers approximately 61,000 sq. feet of space. The building was also one of the early locker rooms for the Yale Football Team who practiced on the nearby fields. The building is divided into four separate areas containing the Small Bore Shooting Range, Intra murals Storage, the Equestrian and Polo Center, and the Grounds Maintenance Shed.

The largest portion of the facility belongs to the Yale Equestrian and Polo Center. The center consists of a stable with 70 stalls and hayloft, 100 person seating indoor ring, and an large outdoor turn out area for the horses, located in the center of the facility.

The project included replicating the existing facilities increasing to 100 stalls. The design includes two studies prepared to facilitate fund-raising. The first is to build a totally new facility on adjacent land, the second to build the stable only, leaving the armory for rehabilitation.

Services included architectural consulting.
