Yale Center for British Art
New Haven, Connecticut
Louis I. Kahn’s final masterpiece, the British Art Center, opened in 1974, was closed for a year in 1999-2000 while the exterior was restored and the interior gallery spaces renovated and restored, with special attention to the legacy of the original design and Kahn’s strong feelings about the natural use of light and building materials. Carpet and linen wall covering were replicated and the pogo panels used to vary the display of art were re-designed and repositioned, as was the entry to the museum on the first floor including custom woodwork for this area and the print library. A sophisticated 3-D computer program was developed allowing a virtual walk-through of the galleries. This program was turned over to the center to assist in the planning of shows and communication with the public through their website.
Services included architectural services; exterior restoration under separate contract to the Owner.
